Today is officially the first day of Spring. Winter is over and summer is not so far away. There is, however one ray of hope in the not-too-distant-future that you probably forgot about amidst all the doom and gloom: the spring holiday break. This precious gap between the 2nd and 3rd term is designed for sheer bliss. Here are StudentUniverse’s top destinations on where to go for your Spring break.
Safari
Baja California, Mexico
Over 800 miles from smoggy Mexico City lies the enchanting playground of Baja California. This peninsula in the north-west of Mexico is one of the best sites in the world for a very different kind of safari: whale-spotting. Roughly 10,000 grey whales migrate to Baja’s warm waters every year, with March/April the best time to visit. Stop by rowdy Tijuana on your way for a taste of US-style spring break revelry…
Alternative: Go on safari in Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan in India during the best season for tigers.
Self-indulgence
Munich, Germany
Everyone knows that March 17th means St. Patrick’s Day, but those looking to carry on the party need look no further than old-favourite Munich. The spring-alternative to Oktoberfest is less crowded but with the same amount of beer; a winning formula.
Alternative: With the Indonesian dry season beginning and peak temperatures in April, the soft sands of Bali are awaiting.
Skiing
Solden, Austria
Missed out on the university ski trip before Christmas? Fear not, Solden in Austria has great powder until May. The spectacular slopes are 2,000m up, offering such incredible views it was used to film the latest Bond film, Spectre. Oh, and the après-ski isn’t half-bad either, not that it matters of course…
Alternative: Combine ski, sun and sake with a late-season trip to Japan. Visit in early April to see the striking cherry blossom trees of the sakura festival.
Sophistication
Hull
A student budget can only take you so far and those seeking a getaway within the UK should consider this year’s capital of culture, Hull. With hundreds of events on all-year round, Hull is set for a lively 2017. Don’t miss the serene Humber estuary or the quaint old-town.
Alternative: Rome celebrates its founding on the 21st of April, why not go wish it a happy birthday!
Spectacle
Thailand
Forget Edinburgh on January 1st or Shanghai on Chinese New Year, Thailand on April 13th is the place to be. Celebrate the ‘Songkran’ festival and welcome in the new solar calendar by washing away bad luck with riotous water-fights on every street corner. This three-day long party is held during some of the best weather Thailand has to offer.
Alternative: Make it to India to take part in the spectacular (and messy) Holi Festival of colours.
Sport
Boston, USA
Birthplace of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Irish-American culture and one of the most famous sports teams in history, April is a perfect time to visit Boston. The Red Sox kick-off the baseball season in early April, while the oldest annual city marathon takes place on April 17th. This makes it ideal for sports fans, and fans of Good Will Hunting…
Alternative: Taranaki, New Zealand is sure to be one of the prime destinations for surfing this spring.
Stimulation
Jordan
Don’t be put off by its precarious location, Jordan is and has always been a very safe country for visitors. Its tourism industry has understandably suffered in recent years, meaning prices are lower than ever but wonder of the world Petra is just as stunning now as it was 2000 years ago. Scuba-dive in Aqaba, sky-dive over the Wadi Rum desert, go canyoning in Wadi Mujib or simply float in the Dead Sea. Jordan has lots to offer for thrill-seekers, and April is a particularly thrilling time to visit.
Alternative: With caving, snowmobiling and even cold-weather surfing to choose from, Iceland is a dream for extreme sports enthusiasts.
Sun
Valencia, Spain
While not as hot as a trip to Spain in the summer, Valencia in spring offers pleasant temperatures, great food and good value compared to nearby Barcelona. Spain’s third largest city is an unbeatable combination of sea and city with excellent shopping, the fascinating ‘City of Arts and Sciences’ and the legendary Mestella Stadium for football fans.
Alternative: Whether it’s hiking in the Atlas Mountains or eating local cuisine on a rooftop, Marrakech in Morocco is at its most enjoyable this time of year.
